Poems’ Revenge

drawing for "poems' revenge" from poet's notebook

So much writing the writing takes over the life till there’s nothing left
but the demands that writing makes: “go over me, assess me
put me in order, type me over, type me up, scan me
OCR me, edit me, compare me with the notebook, put me together
find me a home, read me, read me aloud, puzzle over me
put me in somewhere, find someone to like me, send me out
do something with me, no don’t put me back in the folder
just a folder by year, I deserve more than this —
you thought I was great when you created me then put me away —
what happened? why am I just one of thousands, thousands —
don’t shove me in the dark again, why are there so many like me
what’s the reason for this, why was I created anyway,
why are there so many of us, we’re bigger than you
you’re nothing, we’re all going to be in books after you’re dead!”
